The designs presented in this book reflect the abundance and variety of plant-life of our landscape, as well as the rich diversity of influences in our culture. What is particularly gratifying is that all these gardens were designed by a Filipina, Shirley Briñas Sanders. It seems fair to say that Shirley's work has done much to raise interest at home in involving a landscape that is suited to our climate and in which the familiar objects of daily Philippine life can find an appropriate setting. This contribution to our awareness of our natural environment has been recognized by Shirley's colleagues both here and abroad, and continues to make itself felt in the form of the many gardens that are now being designed with the same sensibility that has guided the creation of the gardens in this book.
